If you are a new Spark AR Creator, knowing how much to charge for an Instagram filter can make all the difference.

Let’s say you got into learning Spark AR Studio, created a few awesome filters and are now thinking of monetizing your filters.

We at Koka Filters have created a comprehensive list just for that, so you can begin charging the right amount.

What the client pays for.

When a client asks you to create a custom Instagram filter, here are a few things that they pay for:

  1. Your time
  2. Your skills
  3. Your experience in various fields that helps you create filters
  4. Your ability to communicate with the brand/public figure and make sure they are satisified (client servicing).

Those are the bare minimum things you charge a client for. Apart from that, here a few other costs that you as a Spark AR Creator are probably not seeing:

  1. Their cost of entering the augmented reality space with your expertise and knowledge around the Spark AR Studio.
  2. Your dedication towards planning the Instagram filter campaign.
  3. Your time and effort spent updating filters and optimizing it for use on more devices.
  4. The cost of resources and energy used for making this filter possible.
  5. The potential new customers/followers reached organically.

These 9 things are at the core of any custom Instagram filter project.

What comes next makes it even more confusing, but stay with us.

Levels of filter complexity.

Not all filters are the same.

A simple face paint mask filter takes not as much as effort as a rigged and animated 3D model filter.

Some filters run on patches while others require you to know how to code — this is even more important when creating custom games, shaders, etc.

Always account for complexity in a filter and make sure you are not missing out on anything.

Clients will sometimes ask for more features to be added in mid-project and you might feel obligated to agree because they are paying you, but do note that this is beyond the scope of the contract and any such revision will be charged extra.

Brand value and perspective shift.

You are creating a custom Instagram filter for a brand.

This may be their first ever filter and their way of getting into augmented reality.

You as a creator are making this possible. And if they are a huge brand, you need to charge them accordingly.

A lot is at stake when you create filters for huge brands. Your expertise, professionalism and creativity will lead to their brand development.

Make sure you make that reflect in your invoice.

The last thing you want is to charge $100 for a filter that ultimately brings in the brand six figures in revenue.

How much to charge for a custom Instagram filter?

If you are a beginner, charge somewhere between $1000 to $4000 for a custom Instagram filter.

This may not seem reasonable for the brand, but inform them about the value you bring, how it will help their brand and the ways in which the project will justify the amount invested.

Choose a base amount to start. Then, add costs depending on the complexity of the filter as well as the brand value you will create for them.

Once that is done, add for additional costs such as filter campaign guides, updates to filters and assets as well as calls that take up your time.

Please ask for an advance of 20–40% or change the entire amount upfront. This will save you from being exploited.

If you use this pattern, you can charge anywhere between $1000 to $10,000 for a custom Instagram filter you create for a client.
